My cavity is only 10mm deep — can I still backlight the stone?
My cavity is only 10mm deep — can I still backlight the stone? Yes, it can work, but do not order the full area on that measurement alone. The sheet fits easily; the connector and diffuser decide whether it looks even. Test it with your real stone first.
What has to fit in 10mm
The glowing area is 1.6mm thick, so allow 2mm for it. The connector is 5.6mm high, so allow 6mm where it sits. Add a 2-3mm opal acrylic diffuser, typically buyer-sourced.
| Zone | Allow |
|---|---|
| Glowing area | 2mm for a 1.6mm sheet |
| Connector zone | 6mm for a 5.6mm connector |
| Diffuser | 2-3mm opal acrylic |
| Cavity | 10mm |
In the glowing area, 2mm plus 2-3mm fits inside 10mm. In the connector zone, 6mm plus 2-3mm fits on paper, but leaves little room for the diffuser to sit flat, and pressure there can show as a hard spot.
Keep the connector out of the shallowest lit area: route it to an edge, a deeper pocket, or outside it, and settle the cable exit first. On a larger panel of spliced sheets, plan a position for each sheet. Sheets fix with 3M backing, so the surface must be flat.
Why you need the diffuser
At 10mm, the LEDs sit very close to the stone. With nothing between sheet and stone, each LED reads as a separate point instead of an even glow. A 2-3mm opal acrylic diffuser spreads the light first, but does not guarantee an even result alone, so test with it in place, at the thickness you plan to use.
What dot-free means at 10mm
Dot-free means no LED points showing through the stone, only an even glow. At 10mm, that cannot be promised from a cavity figure alone: stone varies piece to piece in colour, veining, and how much light it passes, and viewing distance and room light change the result again. A high-density sheet improves your chances, but density alone is not a guarantee here. For distance in general, see the distance article.
Test it with a sample first
Order a sample of the exact sheet you plan to install. For a colour-changing panel, the BG-0318 RGBCCT sheet is 490 by 245mm, 24V, 50W, with 640 2835 LEDs and 2700K plus 6000K white channels on 6 cores. A single-colour panel needs a different sheet.
Build the test as you plan to build the job: an offcut of the real stone, same colour and finish, with the sheet, 2-3mm diffuser, and planned connector position inside a true 10mm build-up. View it from the distance people will stand at, in light close to the finished room, and check centre, edges, and connector zone separately.
If the test shows dots
Deepen the cavity where the structure allows it, and retest before ordering the full area. Do not assume a small change will be enough; the test decides. If you cannot deepen it, decide beforehand whether the tested look is acceptable against the brief. Soft texture may suit a feature wall where the stone carries veining, yet fail where the brief calls for a flat, even glow. Do not order the full area hoping the result improves at scale.
Checklist before you commit
- Cavity: a true 10mm, measured after backing and fixings are in place.
- Allowances: 2mm glowing area, 6mm connector zone.
- Diffuser: 2-3mm opal acrylic, sourced and cut before ordering.
- Connector: out of the shallowest lit area, cable exit settled.
- Sample: tested with the real stone, diffuser, and build-up.
- Power: controller and supply confirmed for total area and voltage.
FAQ
Can sheet and diffuser both fit in 10mm?
Yes, in the glowing area: 2mm plus 2-3mm. The connector zone is tighter: allow 6mm there first.
Can I leave the diffuser out?
You gain space but lose the light-spreading layer. At 10mm, LED points will usually show through.
Will the connector fit in 10mm?
On paper, yes: 6mm plus 2-3mm. Keep it out of the shallowest lit area, where pressure shows as a hard spot.
Should I order the full area after one good sample photo?
No. A photo can hide points the eye catches, and a different offcut is not the same test. Judge the physical sample at normal distance.
What if the sample test shows dots?
Deepen the cavity where you can and retest, or accept the tested look against the brief before ordering more.
Request a quote or a sample
If your cavity is 10mm and your stone is chosen, send the panel size, stone type, and connector position, and ask for the sheet that matches your test. You can request a quote or a sample for the flexible PCB LED light sheet and confirm controller, power supply, and diffuser details before committing.
