Backlit Stone Countertops with LED Light Sheets
A backlit stone countertop is a translucent slab, usually onyx, agate or a translucent quartzite such as Cristallo, lit from underneath so the veins and colors glow. The light source is a layer of thin LED light sheets mounted on a backing panel 30–80 mm below the stone, powered by 24V drivers hidden in the cabinet. Done well, the whole surface glows evenly with no visible LED dots or dark corners. The same method lights other backlit stone surfaces too, from bar fronts and vanities to feature walls.
Which stones can be backlit?
Only stone that lets light through can be backlit. A quick test: hold a phone flashlight against the back of the slab in a dark room. If the light shows through clearly on the front, the stone is a good candidate. Most engineered quartz is opaque; see can quartz countertops be backlit for the few designs that work.
| Stone | Light transmission | Notes for countertops |
|---|---|---|
| Onyx | High | The most common choice for backlit bars, vanities and feature islands. Warm, dramatic glow. Softer than granite, so it suits lower-wear surfaces. |
| Agate and semi-precious slabs | High | Strong patterns and colors when lit. Premium material, mostly used for feature pieces. |
| Translucent quartzite (e.g. Cristallo) | Medium, varies by slab | Harder and more practical for kitchen islands. Check each slab, because translucency changes from block to block. |
| Some white marbles | Low to medium | Only works with thin or naturally translucent slabs. Always test first. |
| Standard granite, engineered quartz, porcelain | None | Not suitable, unless the manufacturer sells a specific translucent version. |
How a backlit stone countertop is built
- Translucent stone top – cut and polished as usual.
- Air gap of 30–80 mm – the space between the LED sheets and the back of the stone lets the light spread so no LED dots show. About 50 mm is a good starting point; confirm it with a sample of your stone.
- LED light sheets on a backing panel – fixed with their 3M adhesive to a flat panel or tray below the stone. A removable tray makes later service easier.
- Wiring in zones – each zone runs to its own 24V driver, so a long island stays evenly bright.
- Drivers and controller in the cabinet – behind a door you can open, never sealed inside the stone.

Planning for service matters as much as brightness. Read our guide to installing LED sheets behind stone so they can be serviced.
Project example: backlit jade island with a cooktop
This island is one of our projects in China: translucent jade, with a cooktop built into the top. It shows the decisions most countertop jobs come down to.

| Item | What we used |
|---|---|
| Stone | Translucent jade (other islands in the series use Pandora stone) |
| LED sheets | 490 × 245 mm: 242-LED single color (28 W per sheet) or 484-LED tunable white (40 W per sheet) |
| Mounting | Sheets fixed to the inside of the carcass, cut around the cabinet frame and the cooktop space, with an air gap before the stone |
| Drivers | On the back panel of the base cabinet, behind a normal door |
| Check before delivery | Island assembled and switched on in the workshop to find dark corners, seams and hot spots |
The light test is the step we would not skip. With the island assembled and lit in the workshop, any dark corner or seam shows up while it is still easy to fix, and the client approves the look of the real slabs before delivery. Where the owner wanted to switch between warm and neutral white, or dim the island at night, we used the tunable 484-LED sheet.

When to use LED light sheets for countertops
Backlit stone countertop specification checklist
| Item to confirm | Why it matters | Useful link |
|---|---|---|
| Stone type and thickness | Different stone pieces transmit light differently. Sample testing prevents color surprises. | Request a sample |
| Countertop size and cutouts | Sink, faucet, seam and support locations affect LED sheet layout and wire exits. | Layout calculator |
| Cavity depth | Very shallow cavities need flatter LED sheets and careful diffusion planning. | Hotspot guide |
| Power and dimming | Long counters may need multiple drivers, voltage drop checks and dimming zones. | Power and controller guide |
Recommended LED light sheet direction
For most backlit countertop projects, start with a flexible PCB LED light sheet and choose the LED density according to stone opacity, brightness target and panel size. CCT options are suitable for warm hospitality interiors, neutral retail displays and cooler architectural effects.
For color-changing counters or branded installations, compare RGB or RGBW sheets and match them with compatible LED controllers.
Key specifications for backlit stone, onyx and resin panels
| Specification | JJS LED light sheets |
|---|---|
| Distance between LED sheet and stone | 30–80 mm (3–8 cm). About 50 mm is a good starting point for most translucent stone; final spacing depends on stone thickness, translucency and sheet density, so confirm it with a sample test. |
| Color rendering | CRI > 95 on our LED light sheets, so onyx, marble and resin colors look natural. |
| Power per m² | Depends on the model. Each product datasheet lists its rated power; send the model or your lit area and we calculate total load, power zones and drivers. |
| Samples | Available. Please tell us which model you want to test (see the LED light sheet range or the sample page). |
| Shipping to Europe and worldwide | Quoted per delivery address. Send the destination city and postcode with your sample or project request. |
How to avoid hotspots under translucent stone
- Test the real stone sample with the intended light sheet and color temperature.
- Keep the LED sheet layout consistent across seams and countertop sections.
- Plan driver access outside wet or high-heat areas.
- Use the voltage drop calculator for longer cable runs.
- Confirm dimming method before purchasing power supplies and controllers.
Illuminated stone surfaces beyond the countertop
Backlit and illuminated stone surfaces follow the same rules as a countertop: a translucent stone, LED light sheets mounted 30–80 mm behind it on a backing panel or removable tray, and drivers placed where they can be reached. What changes is the structure around the stone.
- Bar fronts and reception desks: the stone is vertical, so the backing panel is fixed to the frame behind it. Plan an access panel on the service side.
- Vanities and table tops: smaller areas, often one driver. Keep the driver in a ventilated drawer or cabinet, not sealed under the top.
- Feature walls and wall cladding: large areas lit in zones, one driver per zone, so a fault darkens one zone only. See backlit stone wall LED light sheets.
For any illuminated stone surface, test a sample of the real slab first, and keep the same sheet model and production batch across the whole surface.

FAQ
Can LED light sheets be used under countertop stone?
Yes, when the stone is translucent and the installation provides enough space, ventilation, wiring access and service access. The exact layout should be checked before fabrication.
Which color temperature works best?
Warm white is common for hospitality and residential counters, while neutral white is often used for retail and commercial interiors. Always test with the real stone.
What should I send for a quote?
Send countertop dimensions, stone type and thickness, quantity, target color temperature, dimming requirement, country and any drawings or photos available.
How far should the LED light sheet be from the stone?
Keep 30–80 mm (3–8 cm) between the LED light sheet and the back of the stone or resin panel. Around 50 mm is a good starting point; test with your actual material before production.
What is the CRI of your LED light sheets?
Our LED light sheets have a CRI above 95.
How much power do LED light sheets use per square metre?
It depends on the model. Check the rated power on the product datasheet, or send us the model and lit area and we will calculate the total load and driver plan.
Can you ship samples to Europe?
Yes. Tell us which model you want to test and your delivery address; shipping cost is quoted per location.
Can any stone countertop be backlit?
No. Only translucent stone such as onyx, agate and some quartzites lets light through. Standard granite and engineered quartz do not. Use the flashlight test above, then test a real LED sheet sample behind your slab.
Is a backlit countertop the same as an illuminated stone countertop?
Yes. Backlit, illuminated and lighted stone countertops all describe a translucent slab lit from below. Standard engineered quartz is not translucent and cannot be backlit; for a lighted quartz look, choose a translucent quartzite such as Cristallo or a translucent engineered product, and test a sample with an LED sheet before ordering.
What happens if an LED sheet fails under the countertop?
Check the drivers, controller and connections in the cabinet first; most faults are there and can be fixed without touching the stone. JJS sheets carry a 5-year warranty, we supply 1 spare sheet per 100 sheets ordered, and we cover shipping for warranty replacements. See the serviceable installation guide.
