An LED light sheet for a light box is usually better when the project needs direct, even backlighting across a custom surface. An edge-lit panel may be better when the design needs a very thin, factory-made panel with predictable dimensions. The right choice depends on size, depth, brightness, custom cutting, service access, and whether the face material hides dots well.
Many buyers use the terms light box, LED panel, LED backlight sheet, and edge-lit panel interchangeably. They are not always the same thing. If the project is custom signage, retail display, stone sample box, or non-standard illuminated panel, choosing the wrong format can create edge shadows, visible dots, or difficult maintenance.

- The light box has a non-standard size or shape.

- The visible area must be evenly lit from behind.
- There is enough depth or diffuser material to hide LED points.
- The installation needs separate power zones or custom cable exits.

When an Edge-Lit Panel May Be Easier
If the panel size is standard, the design is very thin, the brightness target is moderate, and no field cutting is needed, a finished edge-lit panel may be simpler. But for custom signage, irregular graphics, display backgrounds, or projects where the lighting area must follow a specific shape, a flexible LED sheet layout can be more adaptable.
Questions Before Choosing
- What is the visible illuminated size?
- How deep is the light box?
- Is the face acrylic, fabric, printed film, stone, or another material?
- Will the panel be cut, shaped, or installed around hardware?
- Where can the power supply and controller be serviced?
- Is the project single white, CCT, RGB, or RGBW?
